Understanding the mechanisms of biological struvite biomineralisation

چکیده
The mechanisms of struvite production through biomineralisation were investigated for five microorganisms (Bacillus pumilus, Brevibacterium antiquum, Myxococcus xanthus, Halobacterium salinarum and Idiomarina loihiensis). After 72–96 h incubation, the microbial strains tested increased solution pH from 7.5 to 7.7 8.4–8.7, removed ortho-phosphate (63–71%) magnesium (94–99%) by biomineralisation. minerals formed identified as (i.e. bio-struvite). Within initial 24 growth rates 0.16–0.28 1/h measured, bio-struvite was observed when supersaturation index with respect achieved 0.6–0.8 units. crystals produced B. H. M. xanthus thin trapezoidal-platy shaped presented a gap size about 200 μm intervals between cumulative volume undersize distribution at 50% 90%. While antiquum I. loihiensis coffin-lid/long-bar shape narrow around 100 percentage 90%, indicating homogeneous crystal distribution. Intracellular phase within cells, corresponding observation intracellular vesicle-like structures occupied electron-dense granules/materials. This study suggests that biologically controlled mineralisation. mechanism is preferred recovering nutrients streams such wastewater because it allows link manipulation conditions production, even in highly complex like wastewater.

Understanding Biological Mechanisms Using Illustrations from Circadian Rhythm Research
In many fields of biology, researchers explain a phenomenon by characterizing the responsible mechanism. This requires identifying the candidate mechanism, decomposing it into its parts and operations, recomposing it so as to understand how it is organized and its operations orchestrated to generate the phenomenon, and situating it in its environment. Mechanistic researchers have developed soph...
متن کاملUnderstanding the somatic consequences of depression: biological mechanisms and the role of depression symptom profile
Depression is the most common psychiatric disorder worldwide. The burden of disease for depression goes beyond functioning and quality of life and extends to somatic health. Depression has been shown to subsequently increase the risk of, for example, cardiovascular, stroke, diabetes and obesity morbidity. These somatic consequences could partly be due to metabolic, immuno-inflammatory, autonomi...
متن کاملUnderstanding of Biological Systems
Systems biology is a new field in biology that aims at system-level understanding of biological systems. While molecular biology has led to remarkable progress in our understanding of biological systems, the current focus is mainly on identification of genes and functions of their products which are components of the system. The next major challenge is to understand at the system level biologic...
متن کاملBiomineralisation of the cartilage-bone interface in the degenerating joint
INTRODUCTION The zone of calcified cartilage (ZCC) has been a notoriously difficult region to study. The significance of this zone has been suggested in previous literature as the site where important changes take place in the pathogenesis of the osteoarthritic joint (Burr 2004). The changes include an advancing calcification front in the cartilage matrix and a bone cement line that progresses ...
متن کاملModelling Magnetite Biomineralisation: The Interactions of Proteins and Fe3O4 Surfaces
The biosynthesis of magnetite is the earliest known example of biomineralisation; however, much of the detailed atomistic mechanisms by which the process occurs are unknown. Within the bacterial strain Magnetospirillum magneticum AMB-1, the formation of magnetite nanoparticles is thought to occur under the influence of the Mms6 protein. The C–terminal of this protein is highly acidic, containin...
